HDS provides Heritage Oil with a continuously managed, GIS-linked knowledge base across their global asset portfolio — using GeoSCOPE on a SaaS basis to keep over 1 million technical files searchable, evergreen and free from knowledge burial.

The Challenge

Heritage Oil holds exploration and production assets in Nigeria, Ghana, Malta, Tanzania, Russia and PNG, with active new opportunity pursuit across additional geographies. As with most E&P companies, the bulk of technical data, information and knowledge for these interests lives on shared file systems — which currently contain over 1 million files and data objects. Keeping this knowledge base accessible, current and free from the "big data burial" problem requires continuous, intelligent management.

The Solution

HDS provides GeoSCOPE on a Software as a Service (SaaS) basis, dynamically mapping files and folders on selected shared file systems to objects in a GIS and user-defined virtual folder schemas — without copying or physically reorganising any data. This means Heritage's working file structure is never disrupted, while the knowledge base remains fully indexed and spatially navigable.

GeoSCOPE crawls the shared file systems at set intervals (typically overnight) to update mappings and automatically process new and changed files through the system's Business Intelligence rules — linking files to map objects and virtual folders. Each morning, a summary report on file changes, affected map objects and BI rule performance is delivered to Heritage's Information Management team for review.

The Outcome

Heritage Oil has found the system cost-effective and comprehensive. Multiple network drives across the global portfolio are linked, deduplication procedures run rapidly to prevent unnecessary file proliferation, and the IM team operates with full data custodian capability. The ability to link data across multiple drives — creating continuity and order across all datasets — has materially improved data search efficiency across the business.
